Can you believe that Thanksgiving is almost here? Once Thanksgiving is here more holidays flow quickly behind and the next thing you know, it is New Years Eve. All of these upcoming holidays are a time for celebration, family, friends, and wine. I have started to think about our Thanksgiving Day menu and what food as well as the wine I want to serve. I will most certainly serve some chilled wines in the white and Rose family. I have a few bottles of Raymond Burr Chardonnay set aside for the occasion as Chardonnay is always a safe bet and a favorite of some of our guests. I am also trying to decide if I want to select a Rose in addition to a Sauvignon Blanc, which is a must on the menu. A nice Sauvignon Blanc that is crisp, clean and refreshing is a nice offset to the dry turkey flavors of Thanksgiving. Don’t get me wrong, I love turkey, but between the turkey, stuffing, potatoes and rolls, a nice refreshing cold wine is just the thing to break up the flavors. I am a red wine fan, but when you have a red with a lot of tannins that remind you of cotton balls, you do not want additional dry foods along with it, therefore I prefer a white with dinner. A favorite Sauvignon Blanc of mine is Hanna, but there are so many out there. I also have some St Clement Sauvignon Blanc and some Venge Vineyards Champ des Fleurs Proprietary White from our California trip last year. Actually, now that I think about it, I have a lot of favorites! Decisions, decisions, a word of advice, start deciding what you want to serve now…there are still a few weeks to make up your mind!

We recently served wine to a large group of people and wanted to serve a good wine, while getting value for our dollar. While selecting the red wine we kept in mind that we wanted to serve a quality wine that was also easy drinking that would serve a variety of palates. We decided on a Rodney Strong 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon and it was a perfect fit. Rodney Strong has consistently produced quality wine year after year that you can depend on. The Sonoma County Cabernet is what I consider their everyday drinking wine that never disappoints. The wine offers hints of blackberries, cassis and oak on the nose, with some layered tannins on the taste. To me I pick up a hint of vanilla as well. The wine is reasonably priced at under $20.00 per bottle. It can be served now or saved for another few years if you wish to store a bit. Since we have purchased Rodney Strong wines for many years, we decided to visit the winery while on a trip to California a few years back. We discovered a whole other selection of Rodney Strong wines that where either winery exclusive or not distributed in our area that we were very impressed by. Some reserves and different varietals where all fantastic to taste, one in particular that we purchased was their “Gentlemen’s Port”. For the current release of the Port, the blend is Zinfandel, Syrah, and Petite Sirah. Even for non port lovers, this port is outstanding. Be sure to pick up a bottle of any Rodney Strong wine you can find and also visit the website at rodneystrong.com.

The month of November has now arrived which is exciting as the holidays are around the corner. This is the time for family gatherings, good food, gift giving and naturally good wine. Even though the next eight weeks can be a bit hectic it always feels like the pressure of everyday life relaxes a little, the year winds down and we begin to look forward to a new year and what it may bring. I also look forward to the winery specials that are offered as the holiday season begins, and this year looks like it may be good for the consumer. I have recently received holiday offers for wine at sale prices as well as reduced or even free shipping. The economy has hit all of us hard and I am sure that includes our favorite wineries. I don’t mind paying for wine I love including whatever the shipping costs in order to get it to my door, but it is nice to get a break now and then, even if that break is a side effect of a bad economy. I would imagine that the discounts are a result of a drop in sales wineries may have experienced and while I don’t get any satisfaction gaining from another’s misfortune, I do think wine prices have skyrocketed a bit. Maybe this will bring them back to a more reasonable price range, possibly a positive of the bad economy will be stabilized prices. Regardless, I will continue to support my favorite wineries and purchase the wine no matter what kind of offers I receive. However, if you are looking to purchase a great gift, start shopping the wine deals now in order to have them shipped and wrapped up in time for your favorite holiday gift giving season.
