The Response

If you’re here you read my wife’s somewhat whiney tale she just wrote about weekday wine and whatever else she was talking about. You know I love this girl, she is my soul mate and the best part is she has a knack for always making me laugh and many times we are laughing about something I did. As I do, she shares a love of wine, yet the big mistake I think I have made is introducing her to some fine wines. Oh boy, now we are hooked. We have agreed many times to curtail our wine tasting during the week to keep the cost down a little. What is funny to me is the excuses she can dream up as to why we should have a bottle on a given weekday. She without a doubt gets the award for dreaming up imaginative excuses. I mean the world is coming... »View More

Partytime

A time and a place. Partytime. A time to party. Any way you say it, it still sounds appealing, doesn’t it? Weekends are usually reserved for partytime and I do always enjoy my weekends. Take this past weekend for example, I got some cleaning done around the house, laundry, had company and drank some good wine. Sounds a little familiar, sort of my weekend MO, but it works for me so you won’t hear me complaining. You also won’t hear any complaints about Monday night either. That’s right, Monday! My husband prefers to reserve the weekend evenings for wine drinking and stick to water during the work week, but he surprised me on Monday with an impromptu Birthday party. Since we agreed that the only time we drink wine... »View More

weekday wine and bad weather

I wonder how most of you feel about a glass of wine with dinner during the week. Is it okay? I think so, however, it is a big debate in our house. Mostly weekends are the time to drink wine, unless of course you are on vacation as we were last week, then everyday is Friday and we had wine each day. Well, this week is back to work and it is hard to get back into the weekday/weekend wine mode. I am reading on this page about the Chaddsford Chambourcin and it’s spicy Zin like quality and I am thinking I should be tasting that again to be sure how good it was. Especially on a night like tonight. We have severe thunderstorms in the area, a tornado watch in other parts of New Jersey, and on the news they said it was raining at a rate of... »View More

Vacation….need I say more?

Well, a Napa vacation it wasn’t so I will not detail every moment of my day as we did in our Napa Times column after our week off in May, but this vacation week did include plenty of Napa wine. This vacation was all about home. We did a lot of those things that you never seem to have time to do, we also enjoyed our yard, patio, and pool. The pool probably most of all as it was a sunny hot week here in NJ with no rain at all. We started out the vacation as we do most vacations with a Silver Oak Alexander Valley, 2002 vintage. I think that goes without saying that it was outstanding. The rest of the week was a mixed bag, we tried everything from White blends, Savignon Blancs to Pinots and of course our favorite, Cabernet. Oh, and a... »View More

Day trip

To end a vacation week of work around our always needy home on a high note, we decided to take a well deserved break yesterday. A day trip with two friends to a place called Peddler’s Village in Bucks County Pennsylvania. Bucks County PA is about an hour drive through some rural and very scenic areas of lower New Jersey across the Delaware River into Pennsylvania. Peddler’s Village is a country style collection of 75 specialty shops and restaurants in a large village setting all within walking distance of each other. Might I add that it is walking distance if the temperature is not in the 90’s as it was yesterday. We consumed a lot of water and took our time in the air conditioned shops. The 75 shops are mixed from arts and artisans, collectables... »View More

Napa Trip

Day 7: Our last real day in Napa…all vacations must come to an end and ours was no different. We all agreed that for our last day we would stay local to the Inn and walk to several nearby tasting rooms. In theory this was a great idea, we just were not ready for the hazards along the way. We started out through some vineyards next door to the Inn and headed towards Ehlers Winery, our first stop. No one questioned the tractor that was traversing up and down the through the vineyard with a white cloud behind it. Until we noticed the driver was covered on this very hot day in one of those hazmat style suits complete with a protective mask. Needless to say we quickly found a detour far away from that area and later learned from a posted sign... »View More

July 2008

The wine of the month for is a new one for us, Honig 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon. This is actually the first time we have tried Honig wines and we are quite pleased. The real question remains why did we never try Honig before? I’ve seen them in reviews and on the shelf and I am really unsure why I never picked up a bottle before now. We were so impressed with the Cabernet, we are anxious to try the Sauvignon Blanc. The 04 Cab is 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot. The fruit for this wine comes from both the family vineyards, one in Rutherford where the winery is located and another in Napa. The wines were pressed off the skins 10-23 days from harvest and then aged for 18 months. The Honig Family started in the business back in... »View More

Fourth of July Weekend

Hope you all enjoyed your long weekend for the Fourth of July! How great is that when a holiday like the fourth falls on either side of the weekend. Most times we have to go to work the next day, unlike Memorial Day or Labor Day when we know we have a long weekend. As usual our weekend was filled with fun! The weather was not the greatest, but it did not manage to ruin the weekend. Thursday evening we dined out on our patio with our son and daughter in law to be. We grilled up some clams, pork chops and poured ourselves some Kendall Jackson Sauvignon Blanc as it was quite warm and humid. As the thunderstorms moved in we quickly retreated inside and had ourselves two outstanding Reds-both produced by Neal. First a 2004 Cabernet that was outstanding,... »View More
